The University of Lausanne is a higher teaching and research institution composed of seven faculties where approximately 15,000 students and nearly 5,000 collaborators, professors, and researchers work and study. The Institute of Geography and Sustainability (IGD) seeks to fill the position of senior SNSF researcher (80%) supporting the SNSF project ‘Taking care of heating, ventilation and air conditioning in times of energy transition: or how repair and maintenance shape energy infrastructure, for a period of 18 months. The position is part of a research team led by Ignaz Strebel (MER).
The IGD is an interdisciplinary community of about 100 academics that work on space, place and the environment. With 15 professors and close to 40 PhD students, the department offers a vibrant, stimulating environment for cutting-edge research. It hosts regular lecture series and distinguished guest researchers from around the world. The post is located in the research group Urban Studies, the largest of the institute’s six groups.

The position will focus on the professional settings and institutions that cover the work that HAVC infrastructures post-construction induce. The candidate is expected to conduct fieldwork with small and medium-sized enterprises, HAVC-technology companies and Facility Management total providers. He or she will interact with project partners in each case study company as well as with an interdisciplinary team of geographers, urban scholars and social scientist, in the IGD.
We are looking for a researcher (with PhD by time of appointment) with social scientific background interested in empirical and conceptual work on the role of technological knowledge and professional work in urban infrastructure transition. He or she should be willing to conduct qualitative research on Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HAVC) businesses. A PhD by the time of appointment in human/economic geography, urban studies, science and technology studies (STS) or related field is required. The candidate must be able to conduct field work in either German or French. The research group, to which the position is related, communicates and publishes in English.
