We are looking for an Operational Planner / Purchaser to join our team.
DSM Biomedical supplies materials and components for medical devices. The market is defined by a high degree of transparency and consistent high quality. This market is rapidly growing and is characterized by long term commitment between partners.

Operations takes care of the timely and adequate supply of the finished goods at the agreed quality and ensures that the delivery of these finished goods to the customers is executed in line with the sales contracts and commercial (sample) orders.
In order to qualify as a supplier in this Biomedical market, a robust and reliable supply chain is critical. For that, the sourcing of raw materials has to be managed adequately in order to meet the desired quality standard; relations with vendors and other external partners have to be maintained well.
The manufacturing of the supplied materials can be done on Biomedical assets in-house, SLA based manufacturing services, and externally by contract manufacturers. Within Operations, technology transfers from laboratory to commercial scale are frequent due to the high rate of product and process innovation. The highly regulated environment in which DSM Biomedical globally operates means that a dedicated quality system is respected to warrant both product safety and quality and yields documented evidence of product concepts that are ready to be appropriately registered. The latter implies the importance of timely and comprehensively integrate regulatory requirements into projects.
In this environment, the Supply Chain Management group in Geleen, The Netherlands is looking for an Operational Planner / Purchaser.
The role of Operational Planner / Purchaser executes and coordinates the operational Supply Chain Planning, Purchase-to-Pay, and Goodsflow processes in all its aspects to ensure timely availability of finished products, intermediates and raw materials. For this role, being specific to the Dutch entity DSM Biomedical BV, the scope of materials mainly includes UHmwPE based materials and applications, resorbable polymers, and device coating products. It serves a global customer base.
With the above scope, this is a very broad and diverse role. You will be the responsible person for operationally steering the entire supply chain to secure availability of finished goods through adequate planning and scheduling and through timely purchase of raw materials and services. Managing these supply chains will be the major part of the daily work, in total about 60% of your time.
Also, new products and innovations need to be included in the running business and the functional excellence of the operational planning and purchasing processes needs to be continuously improved. In general, about 40% of the time is related these innovation and improvement activities.
Furthermore, you will also be key-user for the related planning and purchasing processes in SAP and coordinate the master data management process.
In this position, you will be based in Geleen (The Netherlands) and part of the local Supply Chain department.
The Operational Planner / Purchaser is a spider in the web of the Operations and Quality departments, material and service suppliers, internal tollers and external Contract Manufacturing Organizations (CMO), and Logistics Service Providers (LSP). The planner needs to keep oversight of what is happening both in our own organization as well as at contracted parties.
For this, effective alignment with the many internal (e.g. other departments, DSM shared services, and assets managed under SLA) and external partners (e.g. CMO’s and other suppliers) is crucial. Hence strong communication skills are required, as well as cultural sensitivity (both different company cultures as well as different regional cultures and languages).
Being able to balance operational work with innovation and improvement activities is an important aspect too.
Your key areas of responsibility in this position will be:
- Support the S&OP process
- Execute and monitor the production planning (MPS), detailed scheduling, and inventory management activities, and adjust or escalate where needed
- Execute and monitor the Material Requirements Planning (MRP) process and related purchasing activities to ensure timely receipt of goods, including driving adequate payment of suppliers
- Initiating and coordinating flow of goods between external suppliers and company (storage) locations
- Reporting on the performance of the process and suppliers involved
- Act as key-user for SAP, including master data management
- Be a leading example in our DSM values and continuous improvement
Background & Experience
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in preferably Supply Chain, Business administration or Engineering
- Relevant work experience in Supply Chain Management, Operations, and/or Purchasing
- Experience in medical device industry or another highly regulated market (e.g. pharma, automotive) would be a plus
- SAP key-user experience in the area of planning / purchasing is highly preferred
- Likes to work in a structural manner without sacrificing on pragmatism
- Enjoying operational dynamics and challenges
- Strong communication skills
- Driving operational excellence in a consistent way
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English; Dutch is a plus
