A roster of suitable candidates will be established for this post as a result of this selection process for fixed-term appointments against both established posts and positions funded by general temporary assistance (GTA).
The Language Services Unit (LSU) forms part of the Services Section providing critical, close support functions to the Office of the Prosecutor in order for it to fulfil its mandate. In this respect, during the preliminary examination, investigation, and prosecution phases, the Unit provides field, event, and telephone interpretation; transcription of audio and video material; translation of OTP evidence and core Office documentation; as well as other services requiring language expertise, such as scanning, redacting, and editing.
Duties and Responsibilities
The incumbent will work in the Language Services Unit of the Office of the Prosecutor under the supervision of the Translation Coordinator. He or she will work in a demanding and high-pressure but rewarding environment. The successful candidate will be expected to:
- translate documents from Ossetian into English and possibly vice versa under close guidance and supervision: such documents cover a wide range of topics including, but not limited to, legal, military, medical, forensic, human rights, administrative and financial matters;
- provide field interpretation either at HQ or on mission between Ossetian and English;
- transcribe audio and video material in Ossetian;
- summarize Ossetian texts into English;
- actively receive and apply feedback and take part in supervised training activities;
- contribute to terminology and reference databases;
- perform other tasks as required (including administrative and/or IT-related tasks).
Advanced university degree in translation, interpretation, linguistics, law or any other relevant subject. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience is accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree;
A minimum of two years (0 years with an advanced level university degree) of progressively relevant professional experience in translation, interpretation or linguistics, preferably in an international organization
Knowledge, skills and abilities:
- Knowledge of topics dealt with by the Court, e.g. legal, military, medical, forensic, human rights, administrative and financial matter;
- Excellent eye for detail, accuracy, style and usage;
- Sound knowledge of relevant computer software, e.g. MS Office, TRIM, Ringtail and CAT tools;
- Proven ability and flexibility in working to deadlines effectively under pressure with evolving tasks and priorities;
- Ability to work effectively and constructively as part of a multidisciplinary and multicultural team;
- Ability to keep strict standards of confidentiality;
- Openness to skills development.
Knowledge of Languages
Mother-tongue proficiency in Ossetian and a near-native command of English is essential. Knowledge of another situation-related language (e.g. Russian or Georgian) may be considered an asset.

- The selected candidate will be subject to a Personnel Security Clearance (PSC) process in accordance with the ICC policy. The PSC process will include but is not limited to, verification of the information provided in the personal history form and a criminal record check.
